French Major

I. Introductory/Preparatory Level

PLEASE NOTE: There has been a slight change in the requirements for the French Major, effective as of the fall semester of 2008. For students declaring their French majors in fall 2008 and thereafter, French 203 will no longer count toward the major; however, French 313 will count. Students who declared prior to fall 2008 may, if they wish, count 313 instead of 203, but not both.

All 3 of the following are required:

French 203 Grammar and Composition
French 310 Writing in French
French 314 What is interpretation?

II. Intermediate Level

Any 3 of the following courses are required.  None of these three courses may be repeated:

French 331 Studies in the Early Period
French 341 Studies in the Classical Period
French 351 Studies in the Modern Period
French 361 Topics in Translation*
FrenchTopics in French: Le Poème en prose de Baudelaire à Ponge, Bonnefis
French 385 The Individual and Society
French 391 Francophone Studies
One extra departmental course in a related topic (e.g. French history, French film, etc.) may be counted toward the major upon approval of DUS.
*However, if a student wishes to count FREN 361, which is in English, toward this major, he or she may not also count an extra-departmental course.

III. Advanced Level

Any 3 of the 400-level courses in Literature and Culture courses are required:

French 460 Novel to Film (may not be repeated).

French 488 Topics in French (may be repeated as often as the topics changes)
French 490 Honors Seminar in French (by permission only)

Offered every fall for exceptionally qualified students; limited admission based on French grades and writing sample. Contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dalia Judovitz (e-mail: djudovi@emory.edu) for more information.

In addition to the participation in the Honors Seminar in French, the Mrs. B. R. Bray Prize is offered annually for the year's best work in French. Sigma chapter of Phi Sigma Iota, the national Romance Language honor society, was installed at Emory in 1930.
