French Major
For students who declare a French major in Fall 2008 or later,* requirements are as follows:
I. Introductory/Preparatory Level
Both of the following are required:
French 310 Writing in French
French 314 What is interpretation?
II. Intermediate Level
Any 4 of the following courses are required. None of these courses may be repeated:
French 312 Histoire de France (Summer in Paris Program)
French 313 La France contemporaine
French 331 Studies in the Early Period
French 341 Studies in the Classical Period
French 351 Studies in the Modern Period
French 361 Topics in Translation**
French 385 The Individual and Society
French 391 Francophone Studies
One extra departmental course in a related topic (e.g. French history, French film, etc.) may be counted toward the major upon approval of DUS.
**However, if a student wishes to count FREN 361, which is in English, toward this major, he or she may not also count it as an extra-departmental course.
III. Advanced Level
Any 3 of the following 400-level courses are required:
French 460 Novel to Film (may not be repeated).
French 488 Topics in French (may be repeated as often as the topic changes)
French 490 Honors Seminar in French (by permission only)
490 is usually offered in the fall for exceptionally qualified students; limited admission based on French grades and writing sample. Contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dalia Judovitz (email: djudovi@emory.edu) for more information.
*Students who declared their majors prior to Fall 2008 may choose to fulfill the requirements stated above OR to follow the rules for the “old” major, which were as follows:
I. 203, 310, and 314 all required
II. Any three of the following required (with the same exception for 361 as stated above): 312, 331, 341, 351, 361, 385, 391. (313 does NOT count under these guidelines.)
III. Three 400-level courses required, subject to same restrictions as above.
NOTE for students studying in Paris with EDUCO:
French 371 and 381 are course numbers reserved for certain courses taken in Paris with the EDUCO program; they may be used to count toward the major at the Intermediate level. For details, consult with the DUS (Dalia Judovitz) or Study Abroad Advisor for French (Candace Lang).
PRIZES
In addition to the participation in the Honors Seminar in French, the Mrs. B. R. Bray Prize is offered annually for the year's best work in French. Sigma chapter of Phi Sigma Iota, the national Romance Language honor society, was installed at Emory in 1930.
