Honors Program

Information on the general College requirements for the Honors Program is located in the College catalog.

Eligibility

a) Studens must have an OVERALL 3.7 grade point average

b) Eligible students will be invited to participate in the program by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in French (with the approval of the French faculty). Invitations will be issued prior to the semester (normally, Spring of the junior year) in which the student would begin research (normally, Fall of the senior year).

c) Upon being invited to participate in the Honors program, the student must respond before the end of the semester (typically, Spring of the junior year), begin reflecting on a topic, and contact a professor in the appropriate field with whom he or she would like to work on the thesis.

Requirements

a) Two semesters of Honors Directed Studies

-French 495A (Research)

-French 495B (Writing)

NB: Only one of the Directed Study courses (495A) will be counted toward the major (i.e. students receiving Honors in French will have completed 4 more credits in French than non-Honors majors). However, 495B satisfies a Continuing Communication (ICW) requirement, whether it is written in English or a foreign language. If suggested by their advisor, students may also qualify to take a graduate-level course in the department.

b) Successful completion of the Honors Thesis

c) Successful completion of an oral exam covering Honors work. This exam will be given during the final semester of the Honors program. The panel of three examiners is chosen by the student’s Honors advisor in consultation with the student and shall include one examiner from outside the Department. The student will be expected to contact members of his or her committee in time to arrange an exam date acceptable to all participants. The exam should take place long enough before the deadline for submission of the thesis to the College to allow the student to make any changes or revisions requested by the committee before submitting the final version.

Graduation with Honors (3.7 GPA minimum)

The degree of Honors, High Honors, or Highest Honors will be decided by the examiners in accordance with College policy (see College Catalog for details). https://catalog.college.emory.edu/community/honors-program.html

Presentation of the Thesis

The original of the Honors Thesis will be deposited in Woodruff Library. For deadline, please see the Academic Calendar.

The Mrs. B. R. Bray Prize is offered annually for the year's best work in French.
