French Studies


Students in French or Italian are strongly urged to study abroad. Department advisors are available to aid students in selecting and applying to the appropriate Emory programs.

Major in French Studies

Requirements

The department offers a major in French Studies (FS) and beginning Fall 2015 a French Interdisciplinary Track (FIT).

The requirements for the French Studies (FS) major are French 310 and 314 plus any three out of the following 300-level courses (311, 312, 313, 331, 341, 351, 385, 391) and three 400-level French courses (460, 488, 490). All courses must be taken for letter grade.

The requirements for the French Studies major with an Interdisciplinary Track (FIT) are French 310 and 314 (in French) plus French 341 and one 300-level course in another department (in English) plus one out of the following 300-level courses (in French) (312, 313, 331, 351, 391) and three 400-level French courses (460 or 488 (in French), 471 and 497 (in English). All courses must be taken for letter grade.

Requirements

The French studies minor consists of French 203 or 205, 310, and 314, plus two additional courses in French at the 300 level. French 313 may count as one of the 300-level courses, and is strongly recommended for a French studies minor. In certain cases, qualified students may obtain permission from the director of undergraduate studies to take one course at the 400 level. All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

Honors Program

Information on the general College requirements for the Honors Program is located in the College catalog.

Eligibility

Students must have an overall 3.50-grade point average (Note that participation in the Honors Seminar/French 490 only requires a 3.5 GPA in French)

Students must obtain the approval of both the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the faculty member who will direct the Honors Thesis.

Requirements

(a) One graduate course in French OR French 490

(b) Two semesters of Honors Directed Studies
French 495A (Research)
French 495B (Writing)
Only French 495A will count towards the major

(c) Successful completion of the Honors Thesis

(d) Successful completion of an oral exam covering Honors work. 
This exam will be given during the final semester of Honor's program. The panel of three examiners is chosen by the student's Honors advisor and shall include one examiner from outside the department.

Graduation with Honors (3.50 GPA minimum)

The degree of Honors (Honors, cum laude; High Honors magna cum laude; or Highest Honors, summa cum laude) will be decided by the examiners in accordance with College policy (see College catalog for details)

Presentation of the Thesis

The original of the Honors Thesis will be deposited in Woodruff Library. For deadline, please see the Academic Calendar.

Other Honors:

The Mrs. B. R. Bray Prize is offered annually for the year's best work in French.
